Defence industry invited to join Australian Defence College courses

This online and residential course aims to engage strategists within Defence and appropriate industry representatives with the key technologies that shape Australia’s strategic environment now and in the future. Technologies examined will include artificial intelligence, cyber, information warfare, biotechnology, space-based technology and hypersonics. The learning outcomes for the course are:

• Analyse technological trends and the potential impact on joint warfighting and the profession of arms.
• Appraise how technology shapes and influences future military planning.
• Examine how technological trends may affect the ADF force structure in the future operating environment, how they are implemented and any implications.

The course will be conducted over five stages during the period 4 April to 7 June 2022 as follows:

• Foundation studies – online over 3 weeks commencing 4-20 April 2022. Approximately 12 hours work required.
• Develop assessment framework – 1 day residential to be held at the Australian War College on 26 April 2022.
• Technology briefs – online over 4 weeks commencing on 28 April to 31 May 2022. Approximately 20 hours work required.
• Apply the assessment tool – 1 day residential at the Australian War College to be held on 6 June 2022.
• Develop recommendations – 1 day residential to be held at the Australian War College on 7 June 2022

The sessions during stages 1 and 3 are generally held twice a week from 0900–1000 hours. The online stages of the course will be conducted using online tools such as Zoom and Defence’s ADELE Learning Management System. Residential stages will be held at the Australian War College (pending COVID-19 restrictions). Travel costs for the residential sessions for course members who are not Canberra based are to be borne by the member’s workplace. There are no other financial costs for the course,

The Centre for Defence Research (CDR), located inside the ADC, is led by Dr Cathy Moloney – a specialist in nuclear policy, international relations and strategic studies and promotes mastery in the profession of arms. The Centre delivers a high-quality engagement and academic outreach program through short courses, seminars and conferences for ADF Officers, Defence civilians, inter-agency personnel and selected regional partners. CDR guides future focused academic research that aligns with the broader national and strategic policy plans for Australian defence and national security. The CDR conducts the Strategos course annually in June/July. The course comprises 5 weeks pre-course work online, followed by a five-day residential component. This is an educational executive professional development course that is aimed at Defence personnel at senior APS6/EL1 and senior O4/O5 ADF Officer rank, relevant inter-agency and foreign military members who are currently employed in, or posting into, a strategist role.

The Strategos course provides students with the opportunity to intensively consider the subject of grand strategy and military strategic analysis. It draws upon the use of historical analysis, strategic studies concepts and the corpus of modern futures studies to improve interdisciplinary theory for practice in strategy and strategic analysis. It seeks to improve research and analysis methods for the professional study of present and future armed conflict.
