Australia’s mobile network operators are preparing to switch off their 3G networks to boost the capacity, speed, and reliability of their 4G and 5G networks.

The 3G network switch off dates:

  • Telstra will switch off its 3G network from 28 October 2024.
  • Optus will switch off its 3G network from 28 October 2024.
  • TPG Telecom/Vodafone have already switched off its 3G network.

The 3G network switch off does not only affect your mobile phone signal, but it could also affect:

  • EFTPOS terminals
  • security systems and cameras
  • scanners
  • tablets
  • smartwatches
  • asset tracking tools
  • surveying instrument
  • water and environmental monitoring
  • wireless operating systems.

Some 4G enabled devices have aspects that are powered by 3G and may be impacted by the 3G network switch off. It’s important you check with your service provider or device manufacturer to confirm.

How can I check if my device is impacted?

If you have received notice from your service provider that your device is impacted, you must upgrade your device.

If you’re with the Telstra or Optus network, you can text “3” to the number 3498 to receive a response whether your device is impacted.

  • Vodafone/TPG Telecom: visit the Vodaphone website.
