Business addresses
When you register your business in Australia, you need to put down one or more business addresses.
The addresses you need depend on your business structure.
Principal place of business
Sometimes called your primary address. This is the main place where you run your business.
It must be a street address in Australia, not a post office box.
It’s typically the same as your home address if you run a business from home.
The location of your principal place of business determines which state or territory tax rules you need to follow.
Tax deductions
You may be able to claim tax deductions for the costs you pay to maintain your principal place of business. This includes rent and repairs, such as mending leaks or fixing electrical appliances. Learn about tax deductions on the Australian Taxation Office website.
Registered office
If your business is a company, you need a registered office. The government mails important legal or official documents to this address.
It must be a street address in Australia, not a post office box.
It can be the same as your principal place of business but doesn’t need to be. Some companies use the address of their accountants or lawyers.
The Australian Securities and Investment Commission (ASIC) publishes your registered office address in its company register.
Postal address
Sometimes called your contact address or service of documents address. This is the address you use for mail you can’t receive online.
For example, some:
- government communication
- customer inquiries
- supplier invoices.
Businesses often use their principal place of business as their postal address. But you can use a post office box or virtual office service instead for convenience or privacy. This can be a good idea if you run your business from home and don’t want to give out your home address.
If you change your business address
You may need to tell the:
- Australian Taxation Office (ATO)
- Australian Securities and Investment Commission (ASIC)
- Australian Business Register (ABR).
