The Australian Government has released the Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Mapping Tool (EVCI Mapping Tool).

The EVCI Mapping Tool was designed for governments and the private sector to:

  • guide optimal investment in electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure across Australia over the next five to ten years
  • support improved coordination and planning of the deployment of charging infrastructure in optimal development zones.

The optimal development zones for fast charging infrastructure are based on various inputs including projected EV uptake, traffic flows, along with other key data inputs.

The Mapping Tool contains data layers that can be turned on or off. The data inputs include:

  • existing and planned public EV fast chargers
  • traffic flows
  • population demographics
  • electricity grid capacity
  • local amenities (like fuel stations, fast food outlets, and tourist attractions)
  • mobile coverage.

The EVCI Mapping tool is intended to be used as a guide only. Modelled outputs should not be taken as a projection.

The EVCI Mapping Tool is an Australian Government initiative identified in the National Electric Vehicle Strategy and has been developed in collaboration with all states and territories and Evenergi.

Other government initiatives

The Australian Government is funding additional initiatives and programs to support the uptake of EVs.
