Overview
The Maintaining Our Supply of Diesel Exhaust Fluid Program is part of a comprehensive investment to enhance resilience of the domestic Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) market.
The objectives of the competitive grants program are:
- to support sovereign capability in manufacturing to produce TGU for the domestic DEF market in the period 2023 to mid-2026
- produce TGU that is compliant with the ISO 22241 specification for the production of DEF, or as certified by Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) for use as a DEF.

Australian consumption
DEF weekly consumption is estimated at 4 million litres / 1,500 tonnes TGU under normal conditions.
Volume of TGU imports by country of origin by month
The average monthly imports of DEF and TGU between April to October 2022 was equivalent to 21 million litres of DEF.
The major countries supplying DEF were China and Indonesia, representing almost 80% of imports.
The following table provides details on imports per month by country of DEF equivalent in kilolitres, where one kilogram of TGU is equivalent to 2.8 litres of DEF.
